ArBCA Directors

Executive Director- James Bates 

james-batesCoach Bates graduated from Conway High School and the University of Central Arkansas.  He coached basketball in the state for 30 years (29 in the Conway Public School District). In 1984 his first job was as the head basketball coach at Augusta High School.  He then went to Conway as the junior high coach for 13 years, winning over 200 games.  After two years as the high school assistant at CHS under Hall of Fame Coach Joe Graham, he became the head coach of the Wampus Cats.    He served in that role for 14 seasons, winning 250 games in that span.  His teams won three conference championships (2003, 2009, and 2010).  His 2008 team was state runner-up and the 2010 team was the 7A State champion.  He coached in the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star game in both 2009 and 2010, serving as the head coach in 2010.  He was named the Outstanding Coach in Boys Basketball and was the recipient of the Lowell Manning Award for the 2009-2010 season.

Bates became the first president of the ArBCA in 2012 and served in that role for two years.  He then became an assistant director of the association.  He became the association’s executive director in October of 2016.

Associate Executive Director- Dean Campbell

Coach Campbell, a Kansas native, is currently the Head boys basketball Coach at Lonoke High School.  Prior to that, he served as the Head Coach at Central Arkansas Christian High School and at Northwood Middle. In his 11 years as a head coach, Dean has amassed over 150 wins.  Coach Campbell has been in the state of Arkansas for the past 15 years and has been a part of a State Title in 2008 and a state finals appearance in 2014.  Previously coming to Arkansas, Campbell coached 8 years at the college level in Missouri, Kansas, and Texas.

In 2011 Dean was involved in some of the first meetings to organize the ArBCA. Coach Campbell has been involved with ArBCA in different capacities starting out as Secretary, At-Large Rep and now Associate Director.  Dean and his wife DeAnna have two children, Regan, who attends Harding University and Riley.
